LO2:Shooting Schedules

I made these charts so that we as a group could make sure that we were on schedule for filming when creating our film. As can be expected when filming The White Room we were unable to follow these schedules exactly due to various obsicals and setbacks for example when filming pn the 24th of November Joe Facer was 20 minutes late as that he was caught in traffic. We decided that we would not waste this time and used it to film establishing shots and when he arrived we knew that we had an hour to create the scenes we wanted to with him.

LO2: Storyboard (All)

These are the storyboards for the White Room trailer. This is a basic plan for what we want the trailer to slightly resemble however, although we will use some of these shots, a few may differ.

LO2: Treatment

Target Audience

The target audience for The White Room would be men between the ages of 18 and 40 from the ABC1 groups of the NRS social scale. The target audience will already have an interest in thrillers/intense films.

Audience Profile

Mark is a 28-year-old, lower-middle-class assistant manager at a local hotel. He earns around £32,000 a year so he has an average amount of disposable income, most of which is spent on films as he loves to go to the cinema. He spends around £30 a month on film-related activities, this includes going to the cinema as well as paying for streaming services like Netflix. He owns his own car, only a hatchback but it is relatively new. He also has a fiancé, so is saving a lot of his spare money for a wedding.

When he was younger he used to dream of being a film producer, he received a small camera for his birthday one year and used it regularly to act out scenes from his favourite films like Terminator and Goldeneye. As he grew up he lost interest in working in the film industry however he never lost his love for intense films. This is where The White Room comes in. Mark hasn't been to the cinema as frequently over the past few months as he is saving money for his wedding, so when he decides to go he wants to make sure he see's something he knows he is going to like. He remembers seeing the trailer for The White Room, he remembers the suspense it created and his desire to find out more about the narrative of the film.

Purpose

The main purpose of trailer is to advertise our short film “The White Room”. The purpose of the trailer is also to cause suspense as the genre of the short film is a thriller. This will be to get the target audience want to see the short film as they will be curious to find out how the events of the short film pan out. The main point of the trailer is to make the target audience want to go and see the film without ruining the main events of the film.

Brief Synopsis

The narrative that this trailer is aiming to portray is one about a 20 year old male who is kidnapped on the orders of a gang far bigger than them selves who us the poor and venerable to do their dirty work for them, in this case Wayne a 40+ year old war veteran left with nothing has befriended a young and good looking accomplice into his gang, Aaron. As Aaron is a new member to the gang the boss has requested that he proves himself and Chris is there to supply him with the details and make the location is secured.

In this audio visual trailer we aim to not give to much away to the audience so we don't ruin the climax of the film.

LO2: Planning the promo (Matt & Frazer)

Credit - Matt

we have chosen to do a film trailer to promote a film, documentary or program

We have decided to do a trailer for a short film called the white room, as short film about a kidnapping. We have studied the narrative and script to brain storm ideas about what we are going to make.
We have created a mood board to encapsulate what our trailer will be about ,what it will look like and to give us inspiration

LO2: Sourcing Actors

Actor sourcing.

Near the beginning of this project on the 6th of November 2017 I set up a listing on a website called "Star Now" calling for actors to play the parts of "Aaron", "Andrew", "Wayne" and most importantly "Christopher." Below I have put all of the applications that we received.

As well as this the website allow people to state that they are interested in the roles but don't match all of the specifications. Below I have attached all of this type of applicants.

We contacted all of the people who applied for our film and we thought would be suitable for their chosen role. We heard back from three and confirmed two for an interview while another sent us a video audition.
Below I have embedded one of the interviews we held in collage and the video audition.

Afterword:
When our first filming date came around the actor James Barlett (shown in his video interview) said that he would be unable to attend the meeting as that a member of his family had passed away. As a contingency we had Joshua Gray (another member of the team) play the role of Andrew. Had we gotten more notice before Barlett pulled out we could have sourced another using starnow but unfortunatly he told us on the day which meant we had to use Joshua. Simmerlaly the role of Aaron had to be filled by Matthew Frost as that Michal Houghton was not able to make it and again told us on the day in which we were supposed to be filming.

LO2: Initial Ideas (Jacob)

For this unit, I am working with Josh Gray, Matt Frost and Frazer Mclean.

So far we have found two bands that we could possibly create a music video for. The main one being a band called Evening Coffee. The band's main song is called "You're Not Invited". The music the band produce has a similar sound to a well-known band called "Cage The Elephant" so I was thinking of following a similar theme to some of their videos. I would give the video an overall vintage theme whether that be with a black and white or a sepia filter. As the video is called you're not invited

The second band we found is called Brooklin. This band are better know than the previous band, however, none of my group knows them personally so they could be unreliable. Despite this, we have decided that if we can get in contact with Brooklin we will use them for our music video.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brooklin didn't have a studio version of their song available until January 2018 which would have been too late for us to use. As we were running out of time to plan our unit 15 project we decided it would be best to make a trailer for a short film we were producing for unit 5. The film we are going to make a trailer for is called The White Room.

In terms of audio, we want to keep it simple yet intense. We intend to use a ticking noise along with quick cuts to create suspense.

LO2: Legal, Ethical & Moral Issues (All)

Legal considerations:

There are several legal issues that must be avoided when making a trailer for a film. The six that are of most relevance are below.
  • Copyright, designs and patents act 1988.
This law protects the creations of people within the marketplace. It means that we are not allowed to take music which we have no claim to, or permission to use and other people are not allowed to steal scenes from our film and put them in their own products.
For our product, we will need to gain copyright permission from the owners of the music which we plan to feature in our short film.
  • Data protection act.
This law means that we have to be very careful to protect the contact information of the people who we have contacted for this film. It also means that we have to have our actors sign release and consent agreements so that they can appear in our film.

Ethical considerations:
  • Discrimination
Discrimination refers to the hiring policy of our film. We must ensure that the policy of the film does not exclude anyone because of their ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation as well as this we must do everything in our power to make sure that our product is diverse.
  • representation
Our film risks being accused of misrepresentation due to the protagonists being portrayed as middle class while the antagonists are to be working class (and are shown in the script to be struggling financially) To this end we will ensure that our characters are portrayed in a grounded and realistic manner which could not be considered offensive.

BBFC AND OFCOM:

The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) is responsible for the classification and censorship of films released in the United Kingdom. The promo for The White Room would receive a "12" rating from the BBFC as it would feature a moderate amount of threat and violence with little to no explicit language. We will adhere to the BBFC guidelines by not using an excessive amount of explicit language or any graphic violence.

OFCOM is the UK regulatory authority for the broadcasting, telecommunications and postal industries of the united kingdom. OFCOM are relevant to the trailer for The White Room as it is being distributed online. This means that it must abide by OFCOM's regulations if it is to be advertised online on websites such as YouTube. There are rules set by OFCOM (section 3 of the broadcasting code) that state they must prohibit material that is likely to incite crime or disorder. Although our film does show part of a kidnapping taking place; it is not overly graphic and I believe it does not incite violence.

5.) Based on your promo – how could people/ places be MISREPRESENTED? Give examples and state how you avoid/ prevent this.

The cafe that we use in the trailer could be misrepresented as there is a kidnapping the takes place outside of it. Obviously, there aren't kidnappings at the cafe (that I am aware of) so this could be a misrepresentation as the cafe as well as the surrounding area. Young men could also be misrepresented as they are shown to be kidnappers, however, we also use other young men in the story who are portrayed as kind and one of them is the person who gets kidnapped. This can help to counter the argument that we are creating a stereotype for young men.

6.) Based on your promo – where would you need to seek copyright permission – give examples. Be clear about how you would seek permission.

If we have a scene that features a recognisable brand we would need to ensure that we seek permission from the owner for use of the product. We will also need to get rights to the music that we use (if any) or any sounds as we are intending to use ticking noises in our trailer to create suspense. However, we are planning to use copyright free noises and if we do use any other noises we will try to ensure that they are copyright free. To gain permission for our noises we can find the website/owner and email them for permission to use the content.

7.) Based on your promo – which assets would need royalties for the intellectual property – Give examples. Be clear about how you would go about this.

We intend on having a ticking clock noise going over the video to build suspense, to avoid requiring to purchasing the royalties we will use royalty free audio track courtesy of creative commons but may be required to give credit to the artist, this would depend on the terms and conditions of the provider, this must be checked before using the soundtrack.

8.) Value-orientated frameworks – based on the purpose of your promo ( inform/ educate/ entertain/ promote/ advertise) – give  3 ways that you plan for your product to meet that purpose. How will this attract/ appeal to your audience?
  • The trailer will entertain the audience by build suspense up into the climax of the trailer where is gives a great indication towards the style and narrative of the product.
  • The video will promote the film by using title graphics to show the release dates and title of the product to build a brand identity and inform the audience on when they can access the product.
  • this will advertise the media product "The White Room" a short film about a kidnapped victim through giving an indication of style to the audience to target the demographic.
